A Guatemalan Experience

When you are a missionary in a Central American country, the beauty of "work" related trips is that you usually get to go somewhere fun, breathtakingly gourgeous, and exotic! This happened to be the case for me, when I was "forced" to travel to Guatemala last week.

As some of you know, we at Mission Lazarus have been throwing around the idea of offering surgical services to our patients, by way of surgical brigades from the US, for some time now. After doing as much research as I could on the internet I finally decided that there was no reason for me to try and reinvent the wheel. There are organizations all over the place that have been offering surgical services for years, so I decided it was time to go visit and see for myself what a surgical missions facility looks like and how it operates... no pun indended!

Health Talents International is located in the costal region of Guatemala about 45 minutes away from the city of Mazatenango. HTI has been doing medical evangelism throughout Guatemala for the past 35 years! After a few emails and phone calls I was lined up to join a US surgical brigade in Guatemala City and travel down to HTI's surgical facility.

I won't bother you with all the boring details of how many ORs they have or what equipment they use... what I will say though, is that seeing another organization at work, sharing Christ's love, was deeply encouraging! Not only did I learn a lot from HTI and their experienced and wise personel, but I also walked away with a greater respect for and understanding of the body of Christ. It is easy to become so involved with the work here in Honduras, that I forget to remember that God is at work all over the place. They are there in Guatemala, we are here in Honduras, millions of people are scattered throughout the world, and we are all working towards the same goal: to show Christ's love to those who do not yet know it. Isn't the body of Christ beautiful!

I'm glad you got to go! Clinica Ezell is pretty impressive! Have you met and/or talked to Marie Agee?

sounds like 3 for the price of 1; seeing God at work in other places, getting ideas for a surgical clinic in Choluteca, exotic beauty... God is good

Wow, Meredith, you are an amazing writer. I can't believe we shared a room for a week and I never got a chance to ask and learn about your work! We were incredibly busy, weren't we? Yikes! But now I can read your blog and keep up with you on facebook - hooray for the magic of the internet!

It's so cool to meet someone who is so spiritually connected to the work of the Lord all around us. Yes, our God is definitely good. And He is using you to be His hands and feet and arms and heart to the people of Honduras, and Guatemala. What a privileged life you lead! ;-D

I'm delighted that He brought us together! Let's keep in touch!
