The tortilla is an important staple in any Honduran meal. If you are a self-respecting Honduran woman, then you know how to make a perfectly round, perfectly flat, perfectly cooked corn tortilla. Though I am not a Honduran, I do live in Honduras and so I decided it was about time for me to learn the fine art of tortilla making.
Last week Shelly invited Idalmi (E-doll-me) over to spend a few days with her while their husbands were at a Men's Retreat. Shelly and I decided that this would be the perfect time to learn some Honduran cooking skills. Idalmi is an expert tortilla maker. She taught us how to make the dough, how to roll our the tortillas and how to pat them out into perfect little discs. She thought Shelly and I were hilarious as we tried to copy her technique. To Idalmi, tortilla making is second nature, to Shelly and I, it is completely foreign. After a few tries Shelly and I started making "adequate" tortillas. When asked if we had done well, Idalmi would smile/chuckle to herself and then say, "Si." She would then proceed to finish our tortillas for us. After a while we started to get better and we were permitted to cook our own tortillas. Though I felt quite pleased with the outcome, Chad could still tell which tortillas we had made vs. the ones that Idalmi had made...
All in all it was a wonderful experience and if you ask nicely I just might make some corn tortillas for you while I am in the US!
