Happy Independence Day!

Yesterday Honduras celebrated their 187th year of Independence from Spain. In the quaint little town of San Marcos de Colon, Independence Day is spent watching the local school children march in the annual parade. All the schools march down to the main street and line up for the parade. Their route? Up main street, around the church, and past the central park where they are judged on technique and musical ability. Every school age child at the refuge (our children's home) participated in the parade this year. It was so fun to see them all dressed up in their uniforms with huge smiles on their faces! The chance to participate in the Independence Day parade is a dream come true. While all the children enrolled in school are "allowed" to participate, it costs money to purchase the uniforms and these kids have never had that opportunity, until yesterday...

thanks for the post of the beautiful children; and for a bit of understanding of the great socioeconomic boundaries, whether intentional or not, that keep so many children from 'participating' ... not only in sweet parades, but even school

I think san marcos will do anything for a parade. It seems like they had at least one a week while I was their.

Cute kids! How cool that all the children from the refuge were able to participate!
